Detroit win playoff opener against Oakland
(Reuters) - The Detroit Tigers beat the Oakland Athletics 3-1 at home on Saturday to win the opening game of their best-of-five American League Division series. Detroit catcher Alex Avila hit Detroit's only home run of the game, a 398-feet solo homer to left field in the fifth inning, to give the Tigers a two-run cushion after they had trailed 1-0 early. Ace pitcher Justin Verlander gave up a run in the first inning when Coco Crisp blasted a 347-feet homer to right field but he quickly settled down and took control. ... Full Story

Francona hired as Indians' manager

Former Boston Red Sox manager Francona gestures to the crowd during a pre-game ceremony in Boston(The Sports Xchange) - After one year off the bench and in the broadcast studio, Terry Francona has a new managerial job. He is the new skipper of the Cleveland Indians. The team issued a press release, announcing that Francona would be formally introduced in a Monday press conference at Progressive Field. Francona led the Boston Red Sox to World Series titles in 2004 and 2007. He was let go last year after a September collapse in which the Red Sox went 7-20 down the stretch to miss out on a playoff spot. He spent this season working as an analyst for ESPN. ...
